Getting Gnarly; PWL Lloydminster
celebrates the 80s

September 8th, 2017

Those were the days; big hair, big shoulder pads, neon colours, music with a great dance beat, and the granddaddy of all video games – Pac-Man. The 1980s was a great decade, and in late August, Points West Living Lloydminster celebrated it with an 80s day.

Pack-Man, and 80s workout gear

A few days before the event, residents worked on some hanging decorations, modeled after colourful coiled Slinky toys. Added to that were hanging ‘vinyl records’, Pac-Man cut-outs chasing and gobbling up yellow dots across the walls, and care partners dressed in 80s workout gear (a la Jane Fonda), and the scene was set.

'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'

The day started with residents’ regular sit-and-be-fit exercise class, but amped up a notch with the driving pop beat of Cyndi Lauper's 1983 hit, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. That was enough to get care partners and residents on their feet dancing together, while others enjoyed watching from the sidelines.

Apparently some even claimed it was a ‘gnarly’ experience*. 'Like totally...'

*’Gnarly’ is a word co-opted in the 80s to mean over-the-top-challenging and cool.
