Young hockey helpers serve up
Family Christmas Suppers

December 19th, 2017

On Tuesday, December 12, and the following three evenings Points West Living Stettler hosted a Family Christmas Supper for residents and their families. With up to 60 people at each of the four sittings, it was a very busy week. For three of those evenings, extra help was on hand from players of two local minor hockey teams.

Giving back to our communities

Kitchen care partner Shelley Bryce came up with the idea of involving the players of the Bantam B (ages 12-13) hockey team that her husband Terry coaches. “Coach likes to work with the boys both on and off the ice and stresses the importance of giving back to our communities,” Shelley says. “At this level of hockey, it’s about teaching and helping mold young men as much as teaching hockey skills.”

They may be back

Shelley adds, “The boys had such a good time serving the suppers and visiting and making new friends at PWL Stettler they have asked Coach if they can please do other functions like this. They are looking into serving a Valentine meal at a neighbouring lodge come February, and I think we could very well see these young men back at PWL next Christmas to do it all over again.”

A group Atom girls (ages 9-11) joined in to help with the final supper on Friday. "A sister of one of the Bantam boys rallied some of her teammates to join in," says Shelley. "The girls loved their evening as well and did a great job.”

Having that extra help was awesome

Recreation coordinator Jenn Dixon says, “The four nights were extremely busy. A lot of us worked during the day too, so having that extra help was awesome. No one got tired and everything went smoothly every night thanks to Shelley’s direction.”
