Pub Night kicks off the 2018 NHL season
at PWL Red Deer

October 10th, 2018

Located midway between the sport titans of Edmonton and Calgary, residents at Points West Living Red Deer are no strangers to sports rivalries. So they weren’t surprised when friends chose to cheer for opposite sides in the televised opening game of the 2018-19 National Hockey League regular season; even though the two teams playing were Toronto and Montreal.

Plenty of pub snacks

The October 3 game from Toronto started at six in the evening, right after most residents had finished their evening dinner. Just in case they were still hungry – and thirsty – there were piles of chips and snacks, pop and O’Doul’s for snacking. The game was on the big screen TV, and about 30 residents, family members, and employee care partners joined in the fun.

Cheering and shouting

“Most of us are Flames or Oilers fans,” says recreation coordinator Alyssa Seifried. “But one Recreation Aide is a big Leaf’s fan so the rest of us just jumped on the bandwagon. The residents were cheering and shouting too and there was even rivalry around the penalty box!”

The game was a cliffhanger, with Toronto winning 3-2 in overtime. “Yay! The Leafs won!” says Alyssa. “Even for residents who aren’t hockey fanatics, the environment proved to be a ‘scoring’ good time!”
