Personal experience helps ease transition
for new residents

May 27th, 2019

New residents will now receive a brochure created especially for them by existing residents when they move in to Points West Living Lloydminster. Much of the information included in the Welcome Package each new resident receives is from a service-provider perspective, so members of the Resident Council decided to add a resident-experience perspective.

"initially they felt... overwhelmed"

Working with Recreation Therapist Karly MacDonald, they explored their recollections of their first few days and weeks at PWL Lloydminster. “Most responded that they initially felt nervous, even scared and overwhelmed,” says Karly. “As a group we discussed ways we as residents could help alleviate those feelings,” she says. “We wanted to ensure our future community members would feel welcomed by all of us residents.”

"what you should know"

And so, along with Karly, residents Sharon Sikora, Gale Bullis (holding the Resident Brochure), Fay Hladchuk, and Beth Kent set about writing their firsthand insight on what life is like as a resident. “The brochure includes a welcoming message, care partner review, some things we enjoy, what you should know, things we look forward to, and a closing message,” says Karly. “This is a great way for our residents to get involved in giving back and sharing their knowledge in our community.”
