Let there be Music!

July 9th, 2019

Before Points West Living Wetaskiwin opened its doors in July 2018, General Manager Tamara Thomas was dreaming of music. A musician herself, Tamara knows well how music can resonate with people at any stage of life. She decided to dream big, and a few weeks ago, she was able to deliver big to her community.

New musical horizons

Tamara’s vision and research led her to apply for a grant from the federal government’s New Horizons Seniors Program to purchase the tools to build a music program for residents of PWL Wetaskiwin. Her application was accepted, and the community is now home to a baby grand piano, a stage, and a sound system.

Recreation coordinator Lauren Johnson says the new equipment will provide an opportunity for the PWL Wetaskiwin Resident and Family Council to run a music program to enrich the lives of residents and the surrounding community.

“Whether this beautiful equipment is being used as part of hymn singing for recreation, hosting trained musicians, or offering up a space for local music teachers to have recitals, we are thankful,” says Lauren. “We have already seen the benefits from this grant.”

Approved by an expert

“It would be an understatement to say that Hedy Klause knows the value of music,” Lauren says. “As an accomplished pianist, Hedy taught piano lessons to countless children in Wetaskiwin throughout her life. It had been a long time since Hedy had sat down and played the piano but with a little encouragement and the temptation of the shiny new keys, she began to play a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace.”
