Intense competition among PWL Stettler ‘Flu Fighters’

November 18th, 2019

Influenza season is back, and so is the opportunity to do what you can to protect yourself and your loved ones. Points West Living Stettler took the influenza prevention message well beyond the usual offering of flu shots and hand sanitizers. They held a singing and dancing 'Flu Fighters' challenge with a prize for whoever best delivered the message…

Anyone can be a 'flu fighter'

Joan Morrison, Educator at PWL Stettler created the Flu Fighters contest for residents, care partners, family, and friends to make smart choices to stay healthy and avoid the flu. She encouraged residents and care partners to get a group together and create a poster, a song, or a poem on how anyone can be a flu fighter; Joan's challenge, ‘Show it, Sing it, or Say it’.

'Get your flu shot and wash your hands!'

Elaine Partsch, recreation coordinator, enthusiastically took on the challenge, created a song, and delivered it with the help of 25 residents. “Residents were a strong team of voices,” says Recreation Therapist Lisa Smith. “They practised and enthusiastically sang the message of ‘Get your flu shot and wash your hands!’”

Next up was the administrators group (shown above). Decked out in face masks and armed with hand sanitizer they sang and danced about the importance of clean hands.

Surprise entry

“The surprise entry was the kitchen staff,” says Lisa. “They prepared a humorous song about keeping the flu away. No one knew they had prepared a song, and they got a rousing round of applause for their performance.”

Residents win big

Judges selected the winning entry, and Joan presented the prize ‘Pictionary Air’ to the unanimous winners of the contest, Elaine’s residents’ chorus.

“We’d like to wish a great big Thank You to Joan,” says Lisa, “who found a fun a creative way to educate and involve residents and care partners in being flu fighters!”
