Resident gives the gift of fresh baked bread

December 2nd, 2019

Points West Living Lloydminster resident Josie Lirette has always loved to make bread and buns for family and friends. Recently she has expanded her gift to embrace the homeless of Lloydminster. Here is how she’s doing it.

Breadmaking is a simple pleasure

“Breadmaking is a simple pleasure that Josie does every two weeks,” says Josie's breadmaking buddy, Recreation Therapist Karly McDonald. “After many months of baking bread together, we decided it would be a good idea to spread her love for baking a little further and reached out to our local men’s shelter.”

Humbling experience

So, one morning recently Josie and Karly made 3 dozen buns and packaged them to take the shelter. The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter gladly accepted Josie’s donation and provided her and Karly with a tour of the facility. “It was a very humbling experience to see how donations like Josie’s are so valued,” says Karly. “During the tour one of the workers shared with us that they serve over 100 meals a day to help feed people in our community. Josie asked if the residents ever received any baked goods such as pies or cinnamon buns. The staff person said, ‘It is a real treat for them to receive donations like that’. So, Josie requested we make something on a monthly basis to take to the shelter so they can enjoy a nice treat once a month.”

"All of us at PWL Lloydminster are more than happy to help Josie reach her goal in helping those less fortunate in our own community," adds Karly, "and to support all of our residents in their own personal journeys of giving back."
