Bottle-thieving Grinch fails to stop special Christmas party meal

January 8th, 2020

Throughout the year, residents and care partners at Points West Living Lloydminster collect returnable bottles to cash in and order take-out for two special party meals – one in the spring, and the other at Christmas. This Christmas, their plans were dashed by a bottle-thieving Grinch.

Especially disheartening

The returnable bottles had been stored outside, and their theft was discovered by maintenance man Darryl Haight in late November. “It was especially disheartening,” says General Manager Allyn Andrews. “All of the residents look forward to this special meal, and with it being so close to Christmas, we were unsure how we would recover the funds to make the meal still happen.”

Last minute bottle drive

Then employee care partners stepped in. “We decided we would donate all of our recycling from home and hope we could recover the cost,” says Allyn. “One care partner, Keisha Weir went home and shared our unfortunate news with her family, and they were equally upset and disappointed. Keisha, along with her family, organized a bottle drive and collected returnables from her friends and several businesses in town and were able to raise $350 of the $400 needed for the special meal.”

Mary Brown's again

For the past three take-out dinners, residents have voted to order in meals from Mary Brown’s. This Christmas, they made the same choice, and on December 20th, they all happily sat down to a meal of Mary Brown’s fried chicken, potato wedges, and coleslaw, with red velvet cake for dessert.

The community’s returnables are now being stored in a more secure spot, and residents are already looking forward to their next taste of take-out coming up during Seniors Week in June.
