Residents drum up good feelings

January 22nd, 2020

Residents at Points West Living Cochrane took part in a drum circle on January 16, and quickly fell into the rhythm of it. The program was requested by resident Elisa Arbuto (on left in top right photo), and on its inaugural session led by Rob Clancy of Rhythm Makers, Elisa was there, along with about 20 other residents.

Wonderful rhythms

“It was wonderful to hear the rhythms being created by all the residents drumming in unison and to see the smiles on their faces,” says Recreation Therapist, Dawn Robertson. “As there were not enough drums for every resident to have their own, some residents shared one drum, working together to create wonderful rhythms.”

Many benefits

“Participating in drum circles has so many benefits for our residents,” Dawn says, “ranging from cognitive stimulation, relaxation, release of negative energy, mindfulness, plus a host of other physical benefits.”

As the session wrapped up, Elisa Arbuto expressed her pleasure with how it went. “It was so wonderful,” she said. “I feel now all my chakras are aligned!” The PWL Cochrane recreation team hopes to offer this program regularly in the future.
