New GM for new Points West Living community

June 22nd, 2020

Points West Living Prince Albert has a new General Manager. Heather Sander started in the position the first week of June, and says she is delighted to be back working with seniors’ care and hospitality. PWL Prince Albert joined the Points West Living family of communities in February 2020.

At home in the area

Heather Sander is no stranger to the Prince Albert Saskatchewan area. She grew up on a farm in the hamlet of Tway (about 60 km southeast of PA), and currently lives with her husband and two young children in the town Wakaw (about 60 km due south of PA).

While her most recent job was in administration and finance with a Rural Municipality, for the previous six years, Heather worked as the Administrative Coordinator for Lakeview Pioneer Lodge in Wakaw. She has also recently completed the Saskatchewan Health Authority leadership training program.

A beautiful place to be

PWL Prince Albert is a beautiful place to be, says Heather. “It was built in 2014, has four floors, including 94 suites with about 100 residents. The main floor has a library, a dance floor, and a dining room. There’s also a 24-hour bistro with a few tables, coffee makers, a mini fridge, bowls of fruit, drinks, snacks and homemade baking from the kitchen.”

“As an Independent Living community, everyone here at PWL Prince Albert is healthy and independent,” says Heather. “It’s a diverse community of mainly English and French speaking residents. Most residents are from rural communities, having moved here after selling their farm or house in town.”

Dining together, COVID style

PWL Prince Albert follows current COVID prevention practices for congregate living settings. “We have social distance exercises and social distance Bingo,” says Heather. “The dining room has only recently reopened (with designated seating and times to accommodate continued social distancing). For quite a while we were delivering meals individually to residents in their suites, but two months of eating alone defeats the purpose in a place like this. The easing of restrictions has been very well received.”

Moving forward as a team

Heather hopes that her previous training and experience – as well as Points West Living’s support for the Eden Alternative philosophy of care – will move PWL Prince Albert in a positive direction. “I think Eden is fantastic,” says Heather. “At the long term care home we practised resident-directed care, and I think it’s a game changer in caring for anybody. Everybody should get choices. It doesn’t matter what stage of life you’re in.”

Heather says she’s excited to be serving with the current team of employee care partners. “Right leadership is based on a team approach; we have kitchen, housekeeping and admin staff here and everybody helps everybody; we’re one big strong team at the end of the day.”

Reading, running and family

In what spare time she has, Heather enjoys running, reading, and sharing the outdoors with her family; and her dog, a ‘little puffball’ Maltipoo whom she hopes to introduce to the PWL Prince Albert community once the COVID restrictions on visiting pets are lifted.
