Founding member of Points West Living retires

July 15th, 2020

Doug Mills, one of the founders of Points West Living and its operations company Connecting Care formally retired as of July 15, 2020. Doug has been a leader in every aspect of the development of both companies, overseeing their growth and their direction in embracing person-centered care.

Vision for resident-focused hospitality and care

Doug was born in Winnipeg, raised in Montreal and moved to Alberta in 1974, where he worked in the hospitality industry for two decades. That experience in managing hotels, restaurants and contracted food services drove Doug’s vision for senior care; to provide a non-institutional, non-medical setting, with resident-focused hospitality and care.

Founded Connecting Care and PWL

When Doug, along with other partners, founded Connecting Care in 2000 and Points West Living in 2006, the vision of person-centered care led Doug to explore and implement the Eden Alternative philosophy of care in the communities they served. Two decades later, each of the 30+ communities still contributes to a growing library of ‘Eden Moments’, highlighting examples of residents and care partners living connected, contributing, and surprising lives; banishing loneliness, helplessness, and boredom.

Advocate for seniors and care providers

Over his career in seniors living, Doug was an advocate for seniors and their care providers at all levels of government. He served as vice president and president of ASCHA (Alberta Seniors Communities and Housing Association) for five years, and on countless committees that have helped shape the future of senior care in Canada.

Doug is no stranger to longtime Points West Living residents and employee care partners, as he served as CEO (or equivalent) since its inception until he stepped down in 2019 for health reasons, and the position was filled by the current CEO, Linda Revell. Doug will continue his association with Points West Living and Connecting Care providing consulting services with a focus on development projects.

Congratulations Doug! And thank you for your commitment to making to older lives meaningful.
