Heritage House courtyard is just ducky

August 3rd, 2020

Along with a profusion of summer flowers, there’s a new waterfowl feature in the courtyard at Points West Living Heritage House in Vegreville. Two domestic ducks, Daisy and Daffy, were donated by an employee care partner and now keep residents entertained by the hour.

Residents love to watch them

“Daisy is the boss,” says recreation coordinator Kathy Sawchuk. “She is all brown including her beak and feet. Daffy has orange feet and a yellow beak. Residents love to watch them swim in their little kiddy pool. They also feed them bread and fresh lettuce from our garden.”

“One resident told me that these ducks are the best thing that has happened this year!”

Home to the farm

Initially, employee care partner Darlene had asked Kathy if she would like to take the ducks. “Darlene lives in town,” says Kathy, “and neighbours were complaining about the quacking so she asked if I would take them home to the farm. Darlene brought them to work and I asked (GM) Alexis if we could keep them here.”

The ducks arrived on July 8th, and will be heading home with Kathy for the winter. Kathy is already excited at the prospect of bringing Daisy and Daffy back in the spring, with their own ducklings in tow.
