"All Aboard!" for a Trip Back in Time

September 14th, 2016

What do historic rail buffs ride on their way to showcase vintage trains to a group of visiting youngsters? Why, a beautifully restored 1949 Dodge pickup, of course! Points West Living Wainwright resident, Don McGuire (in photo, front) and his friend Cory Robinson are dressed for their roles as conductor and engineer at the Wainwright Rail Park.

Sharing passion for railway

Don McGuire is founder and past president of the Wainwright Railway Preservation Society, and Cory is the current president, and they’re always ready to share their passion and knowledge of all things railway.

The 23 children from Lloydminster’s Big Brothers Big Sisters got to see how a rail yard works, and got to explore several rail cars and locomotives and a caboose built in 1932 from a 1911 boxcar. “CN never threw anything out,” Don says, “They recycled everything!”

Speed and luxury

Don, Cory, and other volunteers from the society brought the past to life for their young visitors, with stories of the history of Canadian National Railways and its predecessor, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, as they carried wave after wave of settlers to Wainwright and other western Canadian towns. They took the kids on a speed cart ride, and finally, to go inside a luxury coach cab.
