O'Doul's Flows at Oktoberfest Party

October 25th, 2016

It’s been just a few weeks since residents began moving in to the new Points West Living Red Deer, but they’ve already begun having some great social times together. On October 13th, the entire community celebrated Oktoberfest, with special food, music and dancing.

Let's bring Oktoberfest to them

“I found out some residents have never experienced Oktoberfest,” says recreation coordinator Kendra Joyes, “I’m very German, so I thought, let’s bring Oktoberfest to them!”

The kitchen team got on board right away and came up with an amazing feast, which was served for lunch in all of the ‘cottages’. The menu included prosciutto-wrapped melons, grilled bratwurst with caramelized onions, German spaetzle and braised red cabbage, with apple strudel for dessert, and of course, O’Doul’s beer.

Polkas were playing

Later in the afternoon, everyone gathered in the main dining room for a party. German polkas were playing on the sound system, the big screen TV showed a highlight reel of Munich Oktoberfest celebrations, and plum kuchen (plum cake) and beverages (including more O’Doul’s) were served.

Dancing

“Everyone enjoyed the refreshments, visiting as a group, and several got up to dance,” says Kendra. “We talked about the origins of Oktoberfest, its traditions and some fun facts about the fair. Residents answered trivia questions and chatted about beer, parties and other times they danced to polka music.”

“Everyone seemed very happy to be there.”
