Residents see their own history on
the big screen

March 9th, 2017

Residents at Points West Living Slave Lake are benefitting from the outreach programs at the Slave Lake Public Library. Every two weeks someone from the library comes by with books, and most recently, with a movie that in some ways reflects residents’ own histories.

Silence of the North

Based on a true story, the 1981 movie Silence of the North was filmed in the Slave Lake area. Starring Gordon Pinsent and Ellen Burstyn, it tells the story of Olive Fredrickson’s life in the rugged northern Alberta wilderness; first as a girl in the early 1900s, and through to the Great Depression and her challenges as pioneer woman, widowed with three children.

PWL Slave Lake recreation coordinator Martine Carifelle says residents really enjoyed it and look forward to seeing what’s in next visit’s Library Bag.
