Gift of hand-crafted quilt offers
year-round cheer at PWL Stettler

April 12th, 2017

The Stettler Stitchers have donated a lovely 12-block quilt to Points West Living Stettler that artfully illustrates each month of the year. It is hanging on the second floor of the building, and is a daily reminder of the kindness of the community.

A year in the making

The quilt was a year in the making, says Joan Statz, president of the Stettler Stitchers. “12 members volunteered to make one block each, due at the end of the month we had chosen, so it took a year to get all of the blocks done.” she says adding, “I chose August.” Joan's contribution is a whimsical beachside/poolside lounger with pillow and sun umbrella.

"We were ecstatic..."

Once the blocks were bordered and pieced together, the Stitchers decided to offer it to PWL Stettler. General Manager Carol Dyck did not hesitate a moment. “We were ecstatic that they had chosen our community to receive it,” Carol says. “Everyone has loved the quilt, especially our residents who sewed themselves, as it cheers up that hallway where it is displayed. It is a calendar and each month has a different look to it so you see something different each time you see it. We also can decorate around the quilt for special occasions such as Easter.”

“Literally hundreds of hours goes into making one of these quality quilts,” Carol exclaims, “from approximately 20 hours for each square to the connecting pieces to the border pieces and then the hangers.”

Product of love

“This group has made hundreds of quilts for the Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer, and they chose our community as the first to receive one of this kind,” Carol adds. “We are so thankful to the ladies of Stettler who have produced this product of love with their skillful hands.”
