When life gives you lemons…

August 11th, 2020

The folks at Points West Living Lloydminster held a special lemon-themed day recently – to thumb their noses at COVID-19. The pandemic has caused changes in the community that crack open the door to loneliness, helplessness and boredom; the three plagues that account for the bulk of suffering among our elders. They wanted to pour in some sunshine.

Sponteneity and variety

General Manager Sarah Walker says employee care partners were working hard to bring spontaneity and variety into the community when she and recreation aide, Jackie Orbeck came up with the idea. “We decided, let’s take the lemons we’ve been given (COVID-19), and make lemonade.”

Fresh-squeezed lemonade

So, they brought in lots of real lemons, and on August 7th, they held a lemon-themed day. Residents and employee care partners decorated the community in yellow, with centerpieces, lemon images on the walls, and lemon slices in the water vases for artificial flowers. Everyone was encouraged to wear yellow, and fresh squeezed lemonade was served throughout the day.

Sarah quotes the Eden Alternative Principle #5, for the motivation behind the day: An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.

“We received such great feedback from the residents,” says Sarah, “we may plan a lemon day again.”
