Freshly pulled new carrots a sweet treat for resident gardeners

August 26th, 2020

It was a gorgeous day for residents of Points West Living Slave Lake to spend out in the garden. For the most part, the eight residents who chose to take part in the garden outing just sat around visiting and soaking up the sun, sights, and sounds. But then they got to do a little early harvesting.

Carrots needed thinning

The gardens at PWL Slave Lake are tended by gardening contractor Ron Radkevich, and this spring he put in great mix of flowers and vegetables in the backyard raised beds. Most of the vegetables aren’t quite ready for harvesting, but on August 21, the carrots needed a little thinning.

Talking and walking about gardens

Residents were happy to help, by picking a few of the bigger carrots, getting them washed off at the outdoor tap, and sampling them. “Digging the carrots got residents talking about their own gardens,” says recreation coordinator Mailyn Fornoles. “Beatrice Cryderman was telling stories about her life when she was young. She loved planting plants; vegetables and flowers at their huge farm back home.”

After picking the carrots, residents and care partners walked and wheeled around the garden, spotting beautiful flowers and other edible bounty, like squash and small green tomatoes. “We all loved spending time in the garden,” adds Mailyn, “and walking in the fresh air.”
