Appreciation for Health Care Aides

November 8th, 2021

'Health Care Aide Day' has been observed on October 18th in British Columbia and Manitoba for a few years, and this year, Alberta joined in the commemoration. Points West Living communities including Drayton Valley, Lloydminster and Stettler were eager to give tribute to their HCA teams on that day.

PWL Stettler - easy to celebrate

“Health Care Aides (HCAs) are a crucial part of our community and the reason our residents receive such great care,” says PWL Stettler Recreation Therapist, Lisa Smith. “When it was discovered that HCA Day was October 18th, it was easy to get excited about celebrating these wonderful employee care partners.” PWL Stettler managers and administrative care partners met to compile gift bags to give to each Health Care Aide on October 18. “The recreation team created thank-you cards and worked with residents to sign them to show their appreciation as well,” adds Lisa.

PWL Lloydminster - treats and appreciation

At PWL Lloydminster, Health Care Aides were treated to Tom Horton’s coffee, donuts and muffins compliments of residents’ family members; a pizza ‘luncheon’; and a cake/cupcake party with residents, where each Health Care Aide was given a lovely rose with a note of appreciation. “Residents spoke on how great the care is here a PWL Lloydminster, and how great the employee care partners are,” says General Manager Sarah Walker. “It was a great day, and an excellent opportunity to recognize all of our employee care partners.”

PWL Drayton Valley - cozy and sweet

At PWL Drayton Valley, residents added sweetness to the celebration, by baking the cupcakes served in honour of the Health Care Aides in that new PWL community. “Our Health Care Aides each received a thank you card and a pair of socks, because those warm hearts need warm feet!” says office administrator Lydia Carter. “We are so proud to follow the Eden Alternative philosophy of care, and this was a great opportunity to practise Eden Principle number four: We thrive when we have purpose and the opportunity to give, as well as receive. This is the antidote to helplessness.

Government of Alberta

The Government of Alberta Declaration of Health Care Aide Day, includes the statement that “…Alberta’s government recognizes health care aides as valued and committed members of Alberta’s health care team; providing the majority of daily hands-on care for seniors and those living with medical conditions or disabilities, helping ensure Albertans’ health care needs are met and improving their quality of life…”

Thank you, to Health Care Aides across the Points West Living family of communities!
