And the Winners are…

December 9th, 2021

The 2021 Points West Living Photo Contest is over, and the winning photos have been chosen. We love to learn the stories behind the winning photos, so will feature them over the next few weeks. The top prize goes to the photographer who took the top two finishing photos.

Double first winner

Nikhil Raju is a Recreation Therapist, who worked part time at Points West Living Cold Lake in the fall of 2021. That's when he took these two winning photos. He has since moved to a full time opportunity in Red Deer, unfortunately not with Points West Living. Nik says he misses the residents and the care team at PWL Cold Lake and well remembers taking the photos you see here.

Joyful bubbles

The lower photo received the most votes in online voting for this year’s contest. It shows resident Joyce Kiehl blowing bubbles. “We were having small talk with each other, doing puzzles,” says Nik, “and I brought out the bubbles and asked residents if they wanted to try. At first, they had to really work at it (getting breath through the bubble loop).”

“I could see Joyce’s joy. She was really happy,” says Nik, who decided get a photo of the moment. “I asked another care partner to stand behind her to help if Joyce couldn’t make the bubbles, but Joyce could do it by herself.”

Giving back, with art

The upper left photo is of resident Jacqueline Hunter. It received the second highest number of votes. “Jackie loves painting. She is really good, and makes cards with her paintings as well,” says Nik. “She was a little down that day, so we asked her to come out of her suite and do a painting to give to the kids at Cold Lake Elementary who had made us some crafts; to show our appreciation. She did a beautiful painting and it was handed over to the school.”

Nik says he really enjoys photography, and took both of these photos on his iPhone-12Pro. He will receive the first prize package which includes a gift basket and gift card.
