Penticton’s park gem gets a gift of love

Last May Points West Living Athens Creek (Penticton) resident Donna Schellenberg wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper, the Western News, expressing how much she and other residents love the neighbouring Lion's Park and the Athens Creek which runs through it.

In the letter, which was published in the paper, Donna explained that since she moved to Athens Creek Lodge, she has always wanted to thank the Lions Club and the City for their care of the little Lions Community Park. Part of Donna’s letter reads:

“I am fortunate to have many window views of all the green shades and now prolific dandelion yellows, which will soon be puffballs. The children’s park is always delightful when small children come to climb, slide and swing. Many of the residents use the pathway for daily outings and use the benches to visit with friends.

“Deer also enjoy the natural parkland and what is left of nature and the stream which is indeed, Athens Creek. Resident owls are often spotted too.”

Donna keeps a close eye on her neighbouring park, so, when a fire destroyed one of the park’s picnic tables, Donna decided she wanted to donate a new one to replace it.

Despite the City’s ideas to place the new table elsewhere, Donna stayed firm and the new picnic table was installed in Lion's Park this past month, donated on behalf of Donna and her beloved late husband Harold, whose names are etched on a plaque of the new table.

Donna is also passionate about recycling, so the tabletop and bench materials are made out of recycled plastic.

“We LOVE walking over and seeing a bench donated by one of Athens Creek Retirement Lodge's residents,” says Athens Creek Lodge’s Office Administrator Ellie Bertrand. “We are excited to see what she does next!”
