Aloha from Cold Lake!

August 4th, 2023

Parrots, toucans and flowers decorated the room, while colourful leis hung from the necks of participants. They may have been in northern Alberta, but July 11, 2023, was Hawaii Day at Points West Living Cold Lake.

“Residents had so much fun last year,” said Claudia Cupasachoa, Recreation Aide, “that this is our second time doing this celebration.”

The afternoon featured Hawaiian-themed decorations, snacks, cake and music, all planned, prepared and set out by the residents themselves, Cupasachoa, kitchen staff and Pam Cole (a volunteer on that day, but who also did a social work practicum in the community). A rousing game of Hawaiian trivia took place (with a prize!), and Cole’s children performed a Hula dance.

“Residents truly enjoyed the show,” Cupasachoa said.

One of them, Roberta Pilon, snazzed herself up for the event with a vibrant outfit and wheelchair decorations made by her daughter. Maggie Macdonald commented that the cake was delicious and the decoration pretty, while her husband Peter also had lots of fun.

“This event helped to teleport our residents to a peaceful, quiet, enjoyable beach experience, where they were able to laugh, enjoy and make happy memories,” said Cupasachoa. “It improved their moods and encouraged socialization.”
