A hootenanny shakes up Red Deer

August 9th, 2023

How often does a Points West Living resident get to throw a wet football at the photograph of a care partner or manager? At PWL Red Deer, they got the chance during a hootenanny carnival event, timed to coordinate with the city’s Westerner Days, which took place from July 19 to 23, 2023.

To encourage residents to give it their all, General Manager Angie MacKenzie stood next to her photo during the “desperado dunk.” One resident offered an “I’m sorry” after she’d hit the mark—but apologies weren’t needed. A soggy target was all part of the fun!

Residents could also try their hands at a western shootout or team roping, or play a game of cornhole, all supported by real-life, non-soggy care partners, managers and volunteers. Each participant won a prize of their choice.

“Our residents expressed joy and security in being able to try without the fear of failure,” said Brandi Mass, Recreation Therapist, explaining how the activity met at least two of the seven domains of well-being highlighted by the Eden Model of Care.

To which we say, “Yee-haw!”
