Visits bring warmth to year’s-end in Drayton Valley

In Drayton Valley, the end of 2023 may have approached with little snow in sight, but a few visits brought a feeling of gratitude (and grinchiness!) to Points West Living residents.

Twice, groups came into the PWL community, starting with the local U11 (Source of Strength) hockey team. After a game, they joined residents to decorate Christmas cookies. “The turnout was great,” said Codie Riddoch, Recreation Coordinator. “Carols played as we decorated, visited and laughed. Some of the team put together a gingerbread house for one of the floors, for our contest between floors.”

A few days later, a smaller team of elves popped by—the grade one class from St. Anthony School. There was colouring to be had, plus a chorus of Christmas songs. “It was nice to see all the smiles as the kids coloured and listened to stories and played,” Riddoch said. “They left us with snowman crafts they made. It was a very nice visit!”

To mark the peak of the season, it was then Santa’s turn to arrive with presents for everyone—followed by the Grinch, who tried to steal the gifts! “We enjoyed cookies and a hot chocolate bar and visits with friends and family,” Riddoch said. “Everyone was just so happy! It really put us all into the spirit of Christmas.” (Special thanks to go employee care partner Sara, who grinched it up for the party, along with resident Lloyd’s wife Marie, who donated her time and energy to help make the event well-decorated and delicious.)

Several residents also went on the move, taking bus trips to tour the Christmas lights glittering around town, including down Snowman Lane. “Everyone absolutely loved it,” Riddoch said. “We sang songs and really enjoyed the trip, and it gave everyone a Christmas spirit boost. Thank you to Paula the bus lady who donated her time and bus and had it decorated with carols playing. It was a wonderful evening!”
